Our Approach

St Francis of Assisi Tarneit is a school committed to evidence-based practices. Our literacy teaching is grounded in the Science of Reading and our teaching and learning practices draw on the Science of Learning as we strive towards our vision towards promoting “the dignity and potential of each person”.

St Francis of Assisi Primary School builds on local cultural knowledge and experience of Indigenous students as a foundation for learning. We work in partnership with local communities on aspects of the schooling process, including the promotion of high expectations for the learning outcomes of Indigenous students, to ensure that the learning outcomes of Indigenous students in our community improve to match those of other students.

EXCELLENCE | RESPECTFUL | RESPONSIBLE | SAFE

At St Francis of Assisi our learning aims to foster curiosity, embrace creativity, develop critical thinking skills and empower students to take responsibility for their learning. Our teachers have high expectations for all learners and work in partnership with students and families. We offer challenging and motivating learning experiences that build on prior knowledge to develop new skills and perspectives. Our aim is for learners to leave St Francis equipped for success by being confident and compassionate with a life long love of learning.

Discovery

Discovery Learning capitalises on children’s natural sense of inquiry and discovery through hands-on exploration of the world around them. This approach allows Year Prep students to explore, discover, negotiate, take risks, create meaning and solve problems – all the important foundations for developing literacy, numeracy, social and emotional skills.

Visible Learning

Using John Hattie’s Visible Learning research we support every student’s learning more effectively by using evidence based best practice.  We aim to develop learners who can set goals, articulate what they are learning and know what their next learning steps are. Our students are encouraged to ask questions and seek feedback to thrive as learners and expand their thinking.

Faith

We connect faith, life and culture to build learners who have a positive impact on others and inspire each other to reach their fullest potential. In collaboration with our community and the parish, we are creating the next generation of learners and leaders who will be able to act upon the power they have for making a positive change in the world by understanding Jesus’ message of love and peace.

eLearning

Our eLearning program is designed and taught to uphold positive digital citizenship and promote smart, safe and responsible use of a range of information and communications technologies. In years Three to Six we have a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program that is intended to extend learning both in the classroom and at home.

Positive Behaviours for Learning

We aim for our school to be a safe, caring and structured environment in which the rights of all students to learn and all staff to teach is supported. Our approach to the management of all behaviours is founded in consistency, fairness and justice through our Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) framework.
